This is a script idea for role play.
This can be several RP sessions. Suggestion: After practicing (or not), record it -- from several player viewpoints even -- and edit it into an interesting movie.
Let's work on this script. Anyone can contribute ideas.
If you adopt this script, it is fully customizable - however you want.
Summary: A wagon train is formed in St. Denis, and then travels to west. Destination maybe McFarlane's Ranch region?
Cast:
- Main Family: ma, pa, daughters, sons, Gramma, Grampa, plus a few of Ma and Pa's siblings and their families.
- Wagon Train Leader: May be a man who does this for a living, or could be one of the most capable men in the family.
- Loners wanting to join...
- Some can be trouble, like an alcoholic, or a wanted outlaw using a fake identity...
- Some can be good, like a teacher traveling west.
Starting scene: ST DENIS DOCK, or on a ship that has just docked.
The Main Family just arrived via passenger ship to St. Denis. Perhaps they arrived from New York, or Holland, or England. They proceed to buy Conestoga/covered wagons and load up families possessions from the piles on the dock. This can be accomplished in game where one of the men takes off to buy a wagon. He/she really goes and steals a wagon possibly near Rhodes, bringing it back to St. Denis to pick up the family. Also, if you have enuf players, you can use 2-3 wagons. You could also use a hunting wagon if hard to come up with wagons.
Meanwhile, others go into town or the market to buy provisions. Think of buying ingredients for camp stews. You need to have enough water, basic cooking ingredients, dried meats, etc.
Along the way, in random places, the different loners come around asking if anyone knows of a wagon train leaving to the west. They then go to the wagon train party's location, and try to join.
Bounty hunters may come along anytime, trying to capture the loner/outlaw, if applicable. This can be a fun side-activity! In which case, the outlaw will need a high bounty of $20 RDO to get the NPC's and players likely to come hunting the outlaw down.
So the wagon train leaves ST DENIS at a walking pace. RULE: Every time it gets dark, a camp needs setting up. This keeps the game more realistic. Plus you need time to eat and rest.
Add drama and humor, fun and troubles, mystery and romance.
- You might give your cast an assignment to come up with one of the above side dramas. Can be very long or very short. (side note: Appreciate it if you could add your ideas in the comments below so others can find them later.)
- Have you heard the saying, "Every movie needs romance"? Well I googled it, seems one person says, "Not every movie needs romance. But every movie needs LOVE. Any kind of LOVE." So maybe to make it more popular, there needs to be love, or an underlying romance... Such as a young man from one family enjoys spending time with young woman from another family, or one of them can be found along the way. For example, let's say someone gets sick and they need to stay near a doctor for a few weeks. Or stay near town while a wagon axle gets repaired, or a new wagon built or delivered.
Suggested:
- Some of the members of the wagon train have horses, but most walk.
- Can a cow be roped and brought along?
- The journey can end at McFarlane's Ranch. Wagons can then be pulled in to corrals.
- Maybe the people rent a shack or two or get jobs working on the ranch, especially after completing a mission for Bonnie.
- If you want to make the route longer, you could wonder around the map.
- There can be a hoe-down1 happening in Rhodes or Blackwater, so you may want to hang out near there for a few days.
- Robbers might show up, or any trouble of different sorts. Act accordingly. B-t-w, if anyone is killed, they cannot just re-spawn, but need to wait 10 REAL TIME MINUTES before joining again (that's to make it more realistic - as if they were seriously wounded).
- A Marriage to Attend? Great time to plan a wedding. Feel free to ask Truth to be the pastor to do the marriage, as she has experience irl.
- WHERE DOES IT END? Well, this could keep going after they arrive at their destination. Perhaps they buy an existing farmstead and settle down there. With RDO, the sky is the limit - with so many resources and a ginormous stage much bigger than any Hollywood movie factory. And that means ....
THE POTENTIAL FOR FUN HERE IS ENDLESS.
Other Ideas:
Maybe borrow script snippets from western movies to get something started - and then just ad-lib around it and see where it goes. You could also find actual scripts online.
